CUBA
Cuba's population is up 1.5 million since 1981
From Herald wire services
HAVANA - Latin Briefs
Cuba is home to about 11.2 million residents, 76 percent of whom live in
urban areas, according to a census taken three years ago and presented
to officials this week.
The average age of Cubans on the island is 35.1, though 14.7 percent of
the population is aged 60 or older, state-run newspapers reported
Saturday in stories citing the census results.
It was not clear why it took three years to report the data compiled in
September 2002. The island's population grew by almost 1.5 million since
the last census in 1981, according to the Communist Party daily Granma.
