Dade teen who ran away to Cuba is back home

A 14-year-old who last year ran away from home and managed to fly to
Cuba where his mother lives has returned to Miami.

''Yes, he's back,'' his father, Alfredo Diaz, confirmed Monday. ``He
arrived last night.''

Miami-Dade police said the teen, now 15, was briefly in state welfare
custody. The boy, whose name is also Alfredo, was taken to his father's
West Miami-Dade home Sunday night.

At first his father refused to accept him, but then changed his mind.
''I took him back,'' the senior Diaz said.

Last September, the teenager, at the time a 10th-grader at G. Holmes
Braddock Senior High, took his father's credit card and managed to buy
an American Airlines' ticket for a flight from Miami-to-Nassau, then on
to Cuba.

He purchased a $157 ticket to Nassau, then one for $315 on to Cuba.

Even though he was only 14, he managed to get by airline personnel
because he was born Dec. 8, 1991, and they only checked the year, not
month, of his birth; they thought he was 15.

It's unclear how the teen made it back to Miami.
