Alfredo M. Cepero, Overseas Executive Director
September 18, 2007. The member organizations of the Alliance for a New
Nation strongly condem the cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment
visited upon prisoner of conscience Normando Hernández González by the
dictatorship of Fidel and Raúl Castro.
Reporting from Havana, independent journalist, Tania Maceda Guerra,
informed that Normando was moved from the Kilo 7 prison, in Camagüey to
the Carlos J. Finlay Military Hospital in Havana. He is one of the Cuban
prisoners of conscience whose state of health is critical.
Normando Hernández suffers from Gastrointestinal Mal Absorption
Syndrome, chronic inflammatory bowel disease, vitamin deficiency,
malnutrition, irritable colon, constant headaches, two compressed
cervical vertebrae, severe hypertension and loss of vision. He has loss
over 30 lbs (14 kg). In addition, his 2007 test for Tuberculosis by
tuberculin skin test was stronly positive.
Normando Hernández, 39, is a prisoner of conscience of the Group of 75,
who was arbitrarily arrested and summarily tried in March 2003. He is
the Director of the College of Independent Journalists in Camagüey and
his home is located in Calle Buena Esperanza # 18, between H and Luz
streets, in Vertientes, Camaguey, Cuba.
We ask all democratic governments and freedom loving people in the world
to denounce this barbaric treatment of a journalist that has only
expressed his disent from the Cuban Government with words and ideas and
has never used violence in any way, shape or fashion.
