HAVANA, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The governments of Cuba and Russia on
Friday officially began the audit of the credit given by Moscowto Havana.

The joint work in Havana is headed by Gladys Bejarano, Cuban audit
and control minister, and Serguei Stepashin, president of Russia's
Chamber of Accounts.

Stepashin, who arrived in Cuba on Wednesday, said there were
"palpable results" in the sectors that received the credit, including
transportation, nickel production, oil industry, medicine, agriculture
and tourism.

In November 2008, Russia offered 20 million U.S. dollars in credit
to Cuba, under a series of agreements on cooperation in these areas.

"I'm extremely satisfied with our cooperation and the great
progress in Cuba-Russia ties," Stepashin said.

The launching of the audit coincided with the closing of a meeting
of the 9th Intergovernmental Commission between Cuba and Russia in
Moscow, where a number of agreements were signed, including one on
cooperation in oil and gas areas.

Bilateral trade between the two countries exceeded 350 million U.S.
dollars in 2007. Russia is the 10th biggest commercial partner of Cuba.
