Fidel Castro's Daughter Speaks with KGBT About Cuba
Reported by Marcy Martinez

Fidel Castro's daughter Alina Fernandez spoke at UTPA Wednesday evening
about her experiences as an elite member of nation her father ruled with
an iron fist.

She told Action 4 News about some of her pleasant memories with her
father Fidel castro.

But most of what she recalls of Castro are his violent acts against Cubans.

Fernandez escaped Cuba by wearing a disguise and using a falsified passport.

She said she never looked back.

Fernandez is considered an enemy because of her refusal to support her
own father as president of the country.

She fled from her family and country with hopes of starting a new life
as a mother, leaving her life as a dictator s daughter behind.

She told students that the memory of watching executions on television
as a 3-year-old validates her reasons for escaping.

Castro was extreme in his political views and actions against those he
considered enemies but he was also an extreme father figure.

Fernandez said his visits and gifts were anything but ordinary.

She recalls one joyful encounter with Castro when he bought her a live
bear to replace toys from Russia he had lost on the way to see her.

Fernandez has hope for Cuba and said changes made under her uncle Raul
Castro's command show some sign of improvement, but nothing can change
the broken relationship between her and her father.

She now lives in Florida where she hosts a radio show in Miami.

Fernandez said Cuba will continue to suffer as long as the political
regime her father once commanded is still in power.
