HAVANA - Ailing 81-year-old Fidel Castro says he was consulted about
this week's decision to replace the education minister, who he says was
``worn out'' and using his job to travel abroad as often as once a month.

Castro says that Luis Ignacio Gomez Gutierrez had traveled abroad more
than 70 times in the past decade under the pretext of international
cooperation and that leaders had lost confidence in him.

Raul Castro replaced Fidel as president two months ago and explicitly
asked parliament for approval to consult with his older brother.

Gomez was replaced by a woman with broad experience in teaching and
school administration.

The elder Castro's written comments were carried Wednesday in the
Communist Party newspaper.
