Cuba and Solomon Islands have signed a technical cooperation agreement
which will pave the way for Cuban doctors to be sent to Solomon Islands.
The deal was signed in the Cuban capital, Havana, by the Cuban foreign
minister, Felipe Perez Roque, and his Solomons counterpart, Patteson Oti.
Solomon Islands will be able to take up an offer from Cuba to hire 40
doctors to work in Solomon Islands.
The offer was initially made in 1998 under the Ulufa'alu government but
was halted during the social unrest period.
Under the revived health deal, the Solomon Islands government will meet
travelling and accommodation costs while Cuba funds the rest.
The recruitment of Cuban doctors is expected to ease the current doctor
shortage.
