PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico --
(AP) -- The Mexican navy detained 83 Cubans who were traveling in
makeshift boats off the country's Caribbean coast and believed to be
heading to the United States.

The navy said Thursday in a news release that the migrants were
traveling in four separate boats, one of which was adrift when it was
found. They were handed over to immigration authorities. Cuban migrants
are usually released from such centers after 90 days.

More than 9,000 Cuban migrants have arrived in the United States from
Mexico since October, as the route becomes increasingly more popular
than crossing the Florida Straits.

Authorities say relatives in the United States pay thousands of dollars
to organized crime networks that take the migrants to Mexico, where they
head north over land.
