With relations easing between Cuba and the U.S., Virginia agriculture
officials are looking to grow their $40 million in farm exports to the
island nation.

Commissioner Todd P. Haymore of the Virginia Department of Agriculture
and Consumer Services said there is a "lot of excitement" about the
relaxing relationship with Cuba under the Obama administration.

As a 47-year trade embargo eased, Virginia began to establish an
agricultural trade relationship with Cuba under Gov. Mark R. Warner.

Since shipping $838,000 worth of soybeans and apples to Cuba six years
ago, Virginia now exports nearly $41 million in farm products.

Haymore said he anticipates greater trade in poultry, livestock and wood
products.
