Payá Meets with Spanish Government Officials

September 14, 2006 - Coinciding with the Summit of the Non-Aligned
Movement (NAM) this week, the national coordinator of the Christian
Liberation Movement (MCL), Oswaldo Payá Sardiñas met with Bernardino
León, Spain's Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in the Spanish
Embassy in Havana. Javier Sandomingo, Director General of Foreign
Affairs for Latin America and Spanish Ambassador, Carlos Zaldivar, were
also present.

The meeting was very cordial and lasted approximately an hour during
which Payá advocated on behalf of the political prisoners. He also
commented on the precariousness of the current situation and the growing
repression by the government against the opposition. This meeting
reinforced the hope that Payá has expressed previously of the role that
the Spanish could play in supporting the liberation of the political
prisoners and peaceful changes towards democracy in Cuba.
