Cuban spies to get reduced prison sentences

MIAMI -- Two convicted Cuban spies are back in a Miami courtroom to get
reduced prison time after their original sentences were thrown out by a
federal appeals court.
The appeals judges ruled the initial sentences were too harsh for Ramon
Labanino and Fernando Gonzalez, both 46. A Miami judge is scheduled to
impose new sentences Tuesday on both men.
They were convicted of being part of a Cuban spy group that sought in
the 1990s to infiltrate U.S. military bases and law enforcement
agencies, as well as monitor Cuban exile groups and politicians in
Miami. The so-called "Cuban Five" are hailed as heroes in Cuba.
Labanino wants 30 years instead of life in prison. Gonzalez was serving
a 19-year term and seeks a 15-year sentence.
