ZANZIBAR Mental Hospital hired an expert from Cuba to end the prolonged
problem of lack of a skilled psychiatric, the Zanzibar Minister for
Health and Social Welfare, Mr Sultan Mohamed Mugheiry, has said.

Tabling his ministry's 2007/2008 budget estimates for the year, the
minister informed the House that the hospital at Kidongo-Chekundu in
Zanzibar, which is able to hospitalise only 120 patients, needs improvement.

He said enhanced war on narcotic drug abuse would help reduce the number
of youths with mental problems, who form the majority of the patients at
the hospital.

Mr Mugheiry, who asked the House to endorse 8bn/- for his ministry's
development and recurrent expenditures, also spoke on the need to
improve the Zanzibar Chief Chemist Department.

The minister mentioned enhancing the combat against HIV/AIDS,
improvement of health management information system, and minimisation of
infant and maternal mortality as some of his ministry's priorities this
financial year.

The Ministry's Shadow Minister, Mr Rashid Seif Suleiman, said the
ministry's budget was too small especially at this time when the country
was striving to meet the millennium development goals (MDGs) by 2015.

"We have a lot of health problems and yet the government allocates such
little funds. We nee to be serious if we want to solve problems of brain
drain, unskilled labour, infant and maternal deaths and lack of
facilities," he said.
