Mexico City - Fifteen Cuban refugees, including some human rights
activists, were stranded on Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, authorities from
Quintana Roo state reported Saturday evening (Sunday morning GMT).

The boat refugees had originally been fished from the water on Friday to
the north-west of the resort of Cancun near the island of Contoy, the
authorities said.

Among the activists was Oskel Lezcano Chavez from the Movement for Human
Rights in Cuba, Lorenzo del Toro from the Democratic Alliance of San
Luis and a fisherman called Valentin Garcia.

Just a few days previously, Cuban security forces had prevented the
escape of 30 Cubans headed for Mexico.
