Tony Castro, son of former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, was among nine
officials elected to the executive committee of the International
Baseball Federation today.
Castro, a former amateur player in Cuba and the longtime trainer of the
island's national baseball team, will serve a four-year term as the
IBAF's third vice president. Paul Seiler of the U.S. also was selected
to the committee, whose mission is to expand international baseball from
the grassroots level to the World Baseball Classic.
Riccardo Fraccari of Italy was elected president, replacing former major
league executive Harvey W. Schiller, who took over in 2007 to fill out
the term of the late Aldo Notari.
There was little drama in Fraccari's selection since he ran unopposed.
