More Cubans arrive in Puerto Rico from DR
SAN JUAN. - The traffic of Cubans from Dominican Republic to this island
has intensified in the last few days as another 12 arrived at Mona
Island, with 439 people of that nationality coming from the neighboring
island so far this year.
Manuel Cruz, of the Puerto Rican Police, also reported that another boat
with more than 60 Dominicans also disembarked in Mona Island in the last
hours. The Cubans as well as the Dominicans were taken by the Coast
Guard to the Puerto Rico mainland, where they were handed over to the
Border Patrol.
In relation to the Cubans, Cruz said that they are six women and six
men, who are in good health, and who disembarked in Mona Island’s Mujer
beach. He said that the Cubans were taken to another place where they
were processed and cleared for the purpose of political asylum. For some
time many Cubans have been using Dominican territory to travel illegally
in small boats to this island.
Regarding the Dominicans, Cruz said that there are 60, among them 15
women, who are all in good health.
He informed that the Dominican boatpeople were taken to Ramey Airbase in
Aguadilla, where they were repatriated to Dominican Republic. The
Dominicans disembarked in Mona Island, 50 miles southwest of Puerto Rico.
