Amnesty launches Web site detailing records of UN Human Rights Council candidates

Amnesty launches Web site detailing records of UN Human Rights Council
candidates

GENEVA Amnesty International says it will publish the human rights
records of countries seeking election to a new U-N Human Rights Council.
The records will be posted on an Amnesty Web site.

The 47-nation council replaces the highly politicized and often
criticized Human Rights Commission and will be elected by the U-N
General Assembly next month.

The former commission was discredited in recent years because some
countries with poor human rights records used their membership to
protect one another from condemnation. Members in recent years included
Sudan, Libya, Zimbabwe and Cuba.

The Amnesty site, which will be in operation Wednesday, will provide
access to concise information about current human rights situations and
records.
