U-N approves new human rights watchdog
UNITED NATIONS U-N member nations have defied the U-S and overwhelmingly
approved a new Human Rights Council.
Only four nations out of 191 General Assembly members voted against the
overhaul of U-N human rights mechanisms.
The Bush administration opposed the new council, saying it didn't go far
enough. Washington had demanded that rights abusers like Cuba, Sudan,
Myanmar (mee-an-MAWR') and Zimbabwe (zeem-BAH'-bway) be barred from
membership in the new council.
The existing U-N Human Rights Commission had been widely criticized for
letting some of the world's worst-offending countries use their
membership to protect one another or criticize others.
Even though the administration opposed it, U-S officials say they will
offer financial backing and try to land a seat on the new council.
