WINNIPEG (CP) - A young Winnipeg woman has died while on vacation in Cuba.

Melissa Nelson, 21, died early Saturday morning after apparently falling
from the four-storey balcony at her hotel. Her uncle, Chief Terrance
Nelson of the Roseau River First Nation, says he hopes the death will be
thoroughly investigated by police. Nelson says it's unclear what
happened, and the federal Foreign Affairs Department is looking into the
situation.

Nelson says his niece was a hard-working and caring person who worked
two jobs to make ends meet.

According to Foreign Affairs, 41 Canadians died violently while abroad
last year.
