CaribWorldNews, WASHINGTON, D.C., Tues. Sept. 15, 2009: President Barack
Obama refused to side with opponents of the Cuba embargo Monday, instead
moving to sign an order to extend the rule.
`The President has determined that it is in the national interest of the
United States to continue for one year the exercise of certain
authorities under the Trading With the Enemy Act with respect to Cuba,`
the White House said Monday.
Obama`s signature on the order comes just over a year since his
predecessor, George W. Bush, signed the last extension.
While the U.S. Helms-Burton law, passed in 1996, would have kept the
sanctions in place even if Obama did not sign the order, some supporters
of ending the measure had expressed hope that the new U.S. President
would have sent a symbolic gesture by refusing to sign.
