KZN to get doctors from Cuba
Wed, 18 Jul 2007
The reluctance of local doctors to work in the rural areas of
KwaZulu-Natal has forced the province to recruit doctors from Cuba, the
Mercury newspaper reported on Wednesday.
The province had signed a new agreement with Cuba, in addition to the
national government scheme bringing in doctors from Tunisia.
Health MEC Peggy Nkonyeni, who was addressing the Provincial Health
Consultative Forum in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday, was quoted as saying:
"We know that we need to improve the living conditions for staff in
rural areas. We will try a combination of staff retention strategies to
keep them within our borders."
Referring to the recent public service strike, Nkonyeni said the
department was still awaiting the full cost of sending state patients to
private sector hospitals.
