WASHINGTON (AFP) – Cuba's return to the Organization of American States
after a 47-year suspension will meet the principles of human rights and
democracy, a US official said Wednesday.

Washington had worked "tirelessly" to ensure "the return of Cuba to
participation in the OAS will be done consistent with the principles and
purposes of the democracy and human rights," said State Department
spokesman Robert Wood.

In an historic move the OAS agreed Wednesday to readmit Cuba revoking a
nearly 50-year-old clause that barred the island because of its Marxist
orientation.

The move, agreed by a consensus vote, sweeps away an anti-Communist
clause that had been part of the organization's charter since 1962.

The text adopted at the OAS summit in Honduras said to complete its
readmission Cuba would have to comply with "the practices, aims and
principles of the OAS" which includes the body's democratic guidelines.
