Chairman Kerry Statement On OAS General Assembly Action On Cuba
[June 04, 2009]

Jun 04, 2009 (Congressional Documents and Publications/ContentWorks via
COMTEX) -- June 3, 2009 Chairman Kerry Statement On OAS General Assembly
Action On Cuba WASHINGTON, D.C. -Senate Foreign Relations Committee
Chairman John Kerry (D-MA) released the following statement in response
to the decision at the 39th Organization of American States (OAS)
General Assembly to approve a resolution establishing a roadmap for
Cuba's future participation in OAS: "The OAS General Assembly's action
today does not automatically allow Cuba to retake its seat in the OAS,
but rather establishes a process - for the first time since 1962 - for
Cuba to take the steps, if it so chooses, necessary to return in a
manner consistent with the OAS's democratic principles and respect for
human rights. I sincerely hope that the Cuban Government avails itself
of this opportunity to take the steps necessary to return to the
Inter-American family.

"Secretary Clinton and her team worked hard to achieve the best possible
outcome at the Assembly. She and President Obama declared their
commitment to greater, more effective partnership with our democratic
friends and allies in Latin America, and I think today's achievement
builds on the good will of the Summit of the Americas." Tomeika Bowden
