MIAMI - The Coast Guard Cutter Pea Island repatriated 58 Cuban migrants
to Bahia de Cabanas, Cuba, Wednesday, the migrants were interdicted
during two separate incidents since Saturday.
A C-130 Hercules fixed-wing aircraft, from Coast Guard Air Station
Clearwater, Fla., while conducting a law enforcement patrol, located a
disabled go-fast vessel Sunday, 90 miles southeast of Cay Sal Bank,
Bahamas. The aircrew relayed the position to the crew aboard the Cutter
Cobia who interdicted the 30 Cuban migrants. Two suspected smugglers
were transferred to Customs and Border Protection officials in Key West,
Fla.
A Coast Guard HU-25 Falcon jet, from Air Station Miami, located a
go-fast vessel while conducting a law enforcement patrol Saturday, 64
miles south of Cudjoe Key, Fla. Crews aboard a 33-foot Special
Purpose-Law Enforcement Craft from Coast Guard Station Key West pursued
the go-fast and used disabling fire to stop the engines after the
operator failed to follow orders and stop the boat. The go-fast was
stopped 11 miles southeast of Boca Chica and was found carrying 28 Cuban
migrants. Two suspected smugglers and their vessel were transferred to
CBP officials.
Once aboard Coast Guard Cutters all migrants are given food, water,
shelter and any necessary medical treatment.
The Cutter Pea Island is a 110-foot patrol boat homeported in St.
Petersburg, Fla.
The Cutter Cobia is an 87-foot coastal patrol boat homeported in Mobile,
Ala.
