Berta Mexidor, Abroad Representative for Independent Libraries
MAY 7, 2007. Gustavo Colas Castillo, the Director of the Independent
Library Leopoldo Pita, in Amancio, Las Tunas has been detained since
this past Saturday, May 5th. In a telephone conversation, Leonor
Castillo, who is in Cuba and the mother of the librarian, confirmed that
a relative had received a call from the police informing about his
detention without disclosing the specific place where he was being held.
It was known that the activist was traveling to several provinces of the
eastern of Cuba in the attempt to meet with other members of the
Independent Libraries Project in Cuba with the purpose to consolidate
this cultural initiative that arose in March, 1998 in Las Tunas. The
initiative took place after the Cuban leader Fidel Castro stated that
"in Cuba there are no prohibited books there just isn't any money to buy
them"
Colas Castillo is also the Deputy Director of Independent Libraries of
Cuba and centers his work in the Eastern part of the island. The
relatives and the Independent Librarians in Cuba make the Cuban
authorities responsible for the fate of Gustavo Colas who has devoted
himself only to the promotion of reading without censorship in Cuba.
Editor's Note: The Independent Libraries Project has been promoting
intelectual freedom in Cuba trouhg "Reading without Censorship." The
efford is supported by Jackson State University and the Mississippi
Consortium for International Development.
