The U.S. Coast Guard has rescued 11 Cuban migrants found stranded on a
tiny island just west of Puerto Rico after their boat overturned in
stormy seas.
Coast Guard spokesman Ricardo Castrodad said crews are searching for
other possible survivors in waters around Monito Island.
He said nine men and two women were rescued yesterday after Puerto Rico
police found an overturned 14-foot boat just west of the island.
The rescue comes just weeks after 15 other Cuban migrants were found
alive in waters near Monito Island after jumping off a boat. One migrant
died.
Under the federal government's so-called wet foot/dry foot immigration
policy, Cubans are generally allowed to apply for legal residence if
they reach U.S. soil.
