Madrid - Spain's Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos has announced
that Cuba plans to release seven dissidents it has been holding since
March 2003. Four of them, including an independent journalist, will be
given political asylum with their families in Spain.
The group were among 75 journalists and opponents of the Cuban regime
detained during what has since been dubbed the "black Spring" of 2003.
The arrests sparked an international outcry and led to the severing of
diplomatic ties between the European Union and Cuba.
The announcement comes only days after bilateral talks were held in
Madrid to discuss human rights in Cuba. Spain has taken on the role of
mediator with the aim of restoring EU ties with Cuba and opening up the
discussion on the human rights situation.
