Cuba through the eyes of children

Cuba through the eyes of children

Cuban Cultural Heritage stages a contest every May, Herencia Kids,
corresponding to the date of Cuban Independence Day and the Cuba
Nostalgia Fair. Working with the art departments of several private and
public schools, we ask elementary and middle school students to draw
their visions of how they see Cuba.

It is well documented that the Cuban tragedy has profoundly affected two
and three generations of Cubans. We would like to know how the younger
generation sees the situation and have requested them to express their
views graphically.

The results have been astonishing. Experiences from an early age,
relayed by previous generations or just absorbed through the environment
resulted in a plethora of images that inspire, stimulate, reveal and
bring forth from the subconscious sentiments of happiness, sadness,
patriotism and humor.

Through images of repression and chains, Cuban landscapes, flags,
beaches and crumbling buildings, these young kids are expressing their
worries in a way that captivates the heart and, maybe, elicits a tear.
