A Cuban dissident arrested on Aug. 22 was hospitalized after going on
hunger strike to protest his imprisonment, his wife told Efe.

Jorge Cervantes, 42, was admitted on Aug. 29 to the Ernesto Guevara
provincial hospital in the eastern city of Las Tunas, Kenia Leguen said
by telephone.

"He's not allowing them to give him fluids or anything. He's just
drinking a little water and the doctor says he has to eat," the
dissident's wife said.

The opposition figure lives in the eastern town of Contramaestre and was
jailed "because he did not fulfill the requirements of his parole,
according to what the authorities said," Leguen added.

She said that Cervantes' arrest came when he was participating in
activities undertaken by the Patriotic Union of Cuba dissident group.

In addition, she said that in the middle of last year, her husband "was
in the hospital in Santiago de Cuba for 29 days for another hunger strike."

At that time Cervantes was under arrest for putting up posters critical
of the deterioration of the environment and roadways in Contramaestre,
according to relatives and fellow dissidents.

In its latest report released at the beginning of last month, the
opposition Cuban Commission on Human Rights and National Reconciliation
said that the Cervantes family had been the target of repressive acts by
the political police.

The Cuban government takes the position that dissidents are
counterrevolutionaries and "mercenaries" in the service of the United
States. EFE
