A Spanish security official says three suspected members of the armed
group ETA have been arrested in Venezuela after sailing from Cuba.
The official said the two men and a woman were detained after their
vessel ran aground Thursday on Los Roques island. The detainees had been
in exile in Cuba for about 20 years.
Spanish newspaper ABC said they have long wanted to leave Cuba but were
denied permission. There was no immediate comment from Cuba or Venezuela.
The official spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because he wasn't
authorized to speak to the media about the matter.
ETA has killed 829 people since 1968 in a campaign of bombings,
shootings, kidnappings and extortion to finance its operations. Spain,
the European Union and the U.S. list it as a terrorist group.
