HAVANA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Cuban media Tuesday condemned the "secrecy"
over domestic corruption and called for many criminal cases and their
outcomes to be made public.
The publication of facts and penalties in corruption cases would serve
as a "healing action" against the "thieves disguised as government
officials ... with the intention of undermining socialism," the official
Cuban daily "Juventud Rebelde" said in an editorial.
It said that all those who are not involved in corruption would not be
afraid of seeing these facts published, the paper said, which is run by
the Young Communist League.
Since taking office in 2008, Cuban leader Raul Castro has created the
position of General Comptroller of the Republic, who is in charge of
fighting corruption and protecting the citizens' welfare. Castro has
repeatedly warned that he "will not allow the power of money ... to
destroy the social conquests of the Revolution, earned with sacrifice
and heroism."
During Castro's administration, dozens of Cuban officials have been
tried and sentenced for corruption, including ministers and foreign
businessmen in many sectors such as the food, telecommunications and
aeronautics industry.
