The video game Call of Duty: Black Ops racked up 360 million dollars in
its first day on sale earlier this week according to publisher
Activision, breaking the one-day sales record for video games set by its
predecessor Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
Gamers bought 5.4 million copies of the title in the first 24 hours
Tuesday, arguably making it the most lucrative entertainment launch in
history.
The most successful cinema launch is Harry Potter and the Half Blood
Prince, which raked in 394 million dollars on its debut in 2009, but
that was over a full weekend, rather than a single day.
Call of Duty: Black Ops is available for Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony
Playstation 3 and costs around 60 dollars.
Activision said it expects the game to take in 550 million dollars by
the end of the weekend. The game tasks players with completing numerous
undercover missions and has been strongly criticized by Cuba for one
segment in which players must try to assassinate a young Fidel Castro.
