The Cuban Rotilla festival, considered to be the island's largest rave
event, was cancelled on the weekend by officials and replaced with a
group of summer concerts.
The 2011 Rotilla festival had been scheduled for Aug 5-7 at Jibacoa
beach, located about 57 km from Havana in Mayabeque province, but in its
place and on the same dates authorities scheduled the new 'Summer youth
concerts' at Jibacoa.
The beach concerts, which include performances by popular Cuban
musicians, were organised by the Mayabeque provincial culture
authorities and the government-supporting Saiz Brothers Association, or
AHS, which gathers young writers and artists around the country.
Rotilla got its start as a rave among friends in 1998 and over the years
it morphed into a very large free festival in Jibacoa, where about
20,000 people attended the event in 2010.
Its concept was to join styles such as electronic music, fusion, rock
and performance and promote the country's underground art, all of this
being sponsored by certain businesses and embassies in Cuba and the
Serbian 'Exit' music festival.
