HAVANA, Feb 07, 2011 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Cuba will have this year its
first law to rule the telecommunications sector, Informatics and
Telecommunications Vice Minister Jorge Luis Perdomo said here on Monday.
At the opening of the Informatics International Convention and Fair 2011
in Havana, Perdomo said that after two years of work on the project, it
was passed to the Justice Ministry and the Executive Committee of the
Council of Ministers for consideration.
"We still have a long way" before it is approved by the Parliament, he
said because it should be consulted first by all the other government
agencies involved in the project.
The official said that the "law shall determine the sovereignty over the
radio spectrum, the social role of telecommunications, its prospects and
the rights of the operators, whether public or private, among the
proposed provisions." The Informatics International Convention and Fair
2011 will be held from Monday to Friday, attended by over 2,000 experts
from 35 countries.
The event includes 14 conferences, seminars and workshops, as well as a
Business Forum and a Trade Fair opened here on Monday.
The Business Forum will be attended by 34 Cuban and 38 foreign companies.
The invited guests include the secretary general of the International
Telecommunication Union (ITU), Hamadoun Toure, and telecommunications
ministers of several nations."
