Unicef starts work in Cuba

Unicef starts work in Cuba
16 September 2008

Map of CubaUnicef is highlighting the plight of 2.5 million people in
Cuba who have lost or been evacuated from their homes.

Following hurricanes Gustav and Ike, Unicef has expressed concern over
the children without schools, hospitals or electricity.

Viviana Limpias, deputy representative of Unicef in Cuba, said the
charity's top priority was to avoid the spread of disease by ensuring a
clean supply of water.

She added that the charity is concerned about the status of education on
the island, as the rebuilding of many schools has been put off
indefinitely, while many of those which survived the storms are being
used as shelters.

"These natural disasters are terrifying events especially for children,"
Ms Limpias explained.

"More funding will be needed to ensure children's wellbeing since we are
expecting several other hurricanes in the next few months."

The US State department has reported that Cuba has turned down an offer
of $5 million (£2.8 million) in aid for hurricane victims from the country.
