Cuba's electricity company says nearly the entire island is without
power as a result of Hurricane Ike. The storm has hit Cuba for the
second time, travelling over the western part of the island and the
capital Havana. The storm uprooted trees in the city and the roofs of
houses were blown off; however there have been no reports of fatalities.

On Monday, four people were killed when Ike hit eastern Cuba. The
category one hurricane is now moving across the Gulf of Mexico towards
Texas in the United States.

The relief effort in Gonaïves in Haiti is only slowly getting under way.
Parts of the city are still inundated after being hit hard by tropical
storm Hanna and then by Hurricane Ike. More than 100 bodies of victims
of the storms have so far been recovered in the city. In Haiti as a
whole, over 600 people have been killed to date as a result of the
hurricane season.
