HAVANA (AP) -- Cuba has politely declined a U.S. offer to send a
disaster assessment team to the island in the aftermatch of Hurricane
Gustav.
Havana says it would rather Washington suspend restrictions on travel
and the sale of food and other materials that could help Cuba's recovery.
Cuba's Foreign Ministry does not mention some $100,000 in humanitarian
aid that Washington offered to send through nonprofit groups, along with
the assessment team.
The statement does say it appreciates the U.S. government gesture
recognizing the destruction that Gustav caused. It comes as forecasters
predict the even more powerful Hurricane Ike will sweep across Cuba
early in the week.
