HAVANA, Cuba (AFP): Days of heavy rains have destroyed homes and killed
at least one person in western Cuba, Civil Defense officials said Saturday.

"The preliminary toll is of one death from drowning plus mudslides
around housing near the Tinima and Hatibonico rivers," in Camaguey
province, which, along with Hoguin, are the most affected areas, the
report said.

Camaguey, 500 kilometers (300 miles) east of Havana, "is now improving,"
although Civil Defense "is keeping a close eye on dams, rivers and
low-lying areas prone to flooding or ground saturation," the report said.

"Precipitation probability remains high," they said.

Cuba looks forward to an active hurricane season, from June 1 to
November 30. Last weekend, the government ran a hurricane and
catastrophe damage control exercise.

The 2006 season produced nine named storms, five of which were
hurricanes that did little damage in the Caribbean, after two seasons of
almost constant storms.
