HAVANA
Ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro reappeared in the state press Thursday
after a short hiatus.
The frequent author of opinion pieces since officially stepping down as
the Communist island's Maximum Leader earlier this year, Castro -- his
byline, at least -- disappeared from the official press for more than
two weeks recently.
On Thursday, the 81-year-old leader-turned-editorialist resurfaced in
the pages of the Communist Youth daily Juventud Rebelde, this time
penning a lengthy letter to journalist Alina Perera.
In the missive, Castro criticized everything from the American
entertainment industry to state workers who pilfer from their government
jobs.
Castro has not fully recovered from intestinal surgery performed in July
2006. The former president, who has not been seen in public in nearly
two years, took power in the 1959 revolution but relinquished it to
younger brother Raul in February.
