Broward On Cuba: It's Too Early To Celebrate

Shomari Stone
Reporting

(CBS4 News) FT. LAUDERDALE What a difference a few miles make. Despite
the celebration in Miami-Dade County, the scene was very different in
Broward, after word spread that an ailing Fidel Castro had transferred
power to his brother, Raul.

As thousands of Cuban-Americans took to the streets in celebration in
places like Little Havana, Westchester and Hialeah, there were no
celebrations in Broward County.

CBS4'S Shomari Stone spoke to some Broward residents eating breakfast
Tuesday morning at Lester's Diner in Fort Lauderdale. Many of them told
Shomari they simply don't understand why people in Miami are celebrating
because they feel it's too early. They say there's no difference between
Fidel Castro and his brother, Raul.

Susan Greenberg, eating breaking with her daughter and teaching her
about what's going on in Cuba, says she feels Raul Castro will also rule
with an iron fist just like his older brother, Fidel.

The overall opinion at Lester's Tuesday morning was simply that it's too
early to celebrate the power shift in Cuba.

Surprisingly, a few folks didn't even know who Fidel Castro is and one
customer told Shomari, "I actually like the man. He stands up for what
he believes and doesn't back down to the United States and that's kind
of rare on this planet."

Despite this unpopular opinion which may offend some people, it's nice
to know that he can share his opinion without worrying about being silenced.
