The United States is working with the European Union (EU) on the
possibility of including some express criticism of Cuba and Venezuela in
a joint declaration at the end of their summit next Tuesday.
"It is an open issue that is being heatedly discussed," said a
diplomatic source in Brussels, Efe quoted.
Washington would like the final text of the summit that will be held in
Slovenia to include a message about observance of human rights and the
rule of law in Latin America, with "specific mention" to Cuba and Venezuela.
European countries have taken different stances; some would rather
refrain from making any specific reference; others, like the Czech Republic
