Dear friends and colleagues,
Below is today's excellent article in The Wall Street Journal
highlighting the sinking of the tugboat "13 de marzo" by the Cuban
government on July 13, 1994. Please send us your any comments you may
want to share to us and/or directly to Mary O'Grady at o'grady@wsj.com.
I imagine she will be happy to hear words of appreciation for putting
this awful crime in the public eye.
If you wish to send a Letter to the Editor (letters@wsj.com), it is
commonly suggested that it be very short and directly related to the
topic at hand. Editors tend to be especially interested in letters
offering new information on the piece. For example, if you know of
similar cases of killings in attempted escapes from Cuba or if you have
had an experience with Cuba's secret police, this would be relevant.
Letters that are brief and to the point have the best chance for
publication.
Cuba Archive continues to work hard to stir attention to people killed
by the Castro regime. The reaction we get only fuels our conviction
that we must highlight the worst crimes of the Castro regime to elicit
international condemnation for human rights abuses and pressure for a
transition to democracy. For example, if you visit our Spanish page and
click on "Archivo Cuba en la prensa" you will see the widespread
coverage by Spanish media of an event in Madrid to focus on this work
sponsored by AIL (Asociacion Iberoamericana de la Libertad) with the
help of members of Directorio Democractico Cubano.
We have also continued our documentation efforts and sadly, the list of
victims grows almost daily. In addition, we have been laboring very hard
on a project funded by Freedom House to put our database of documented
cases online and improve on our present website. That will hopefully be
launched in a few weeks, but meanwhile please visit our website,
www.CubaArchive.org, for new content (including the report in English on
the tugboat massacre and additional case profiles).
Many of you who know Armando Lago will welcome the news that he is
recovering successfully at home. His work, as you know, constituted the
pillar of this project and he stays abreast of and involved with as much
as he can of our continuing work.
