Authorities refuse to issue exit permit for daughter of political prisoner

CIEGO DE AVILA, Cuba - October 22 (Abel Escobar Ramírez /
www.cubanet.org) - Cuban migratory authorities have refused to issue an
exit visa for a 12-year-old daughter of a political prisoner who wanted
to go live with an aunt in Perú.

The minor, Emily Escobedo, initially sought to visit her aunt, Edelys
Escobedo, who had cared for her since she was little.

Emily's father explained in a telephone call from the Cerámica Roja
prison in Camagüey province, that when the girl first solicited the
permit to visit, authorities denied it, saying they would only issue a
permit to emigrate permanently.

After fulfilling the requirements for this permit, which included a
notary's visit to the prison to secure the father's signature, the
government again denied the exit visa, Escobedo said.

Escobedo, 39, has served 11 years of a 23 year sentence for engaging in
"enemy propaganda and espionage."
