Cuban Provinces Still Waterless

Cuban Provinces Still Waterless

Havana, Nov 26 (Prensa Latina) Despite favorable rainfall accumulations in most of the country during the year’s rainy season, the Cuban provinces of Camaguey, Las Tunas and Holguin are still suffering drought.

According to Granma newspaper, the current volume of water in these territory reservoirs is at 50 percent, and 198,700 people are affected by low water supply.

The hardest hit regions are currently implementing several projects to improve water supply by building long-distance pipes and eliminating leaky lines.

Santiago de Cuba, Havana, Camaguey and Holguin are carrying out a wide program to improve supply and distribution of water.

The over two-year drought that has sieged the nation left reservoirs at 35-percent capacity, which was alleviated by rains of hurricanes from the present storm season.

According to experts from Cuba’s National Institute of Hydraulic Resources, this has been the driest month of the year, with 41 percent of the national average until November 24.
