Cuba plans to do away with unemployment benefits and find workers more
productive jobs, communist Cuba's top union leader said Monday.
"Nobody will fall by the wayside, but we can't keep going the way we
are. Some won't like the new labour proposal, but the state can't keep
subsidizing available workers," said Salvador Valdez, who leads the
Cuban Workers' Union (CTC) in the Americas' only one-party communist regime.
He said all unemployed workers will be steered "to the most pressing
productive jobs" in construction and agriculture, stressing that the
move would be carried out "in an orderly and correct" way to avoid major
disruptions.
