BRUSSELS, Belgium: The European Union says it is giving €2 million
(US$2.9 million) to people made homeless by Hurricane Gustav when it hit
several Caribbean nations.

The EU says the money will pay for clean water, food, medical care,
shelter and basic household items in Haiti, Cuba, Jamaica and the
Dominican Republic.

It says some 8,000 people in Haiti are living in temporary housing after
high winds and floods destroyed homes and farms on the island.

The hurricane has killed at least 94 people in the Caribbean and is now
headed toward the Gulf Coast of the United States. Most southern
Louisiana residents — some 2 million people — have fled the area.
