Criticism for EU's decision to lift sanctions on Cuba

Criticism for EU's decision to lift sanctions on Cuba
Friday, 20 June 2008

Several leading dissidents in Cuba have criticised the European Union
(EU) for its decision to lift the sanctions imposed on the island's
communist government five years ago.

In a BBC interview, Miriam Leiva - one of the founding members of the
dissident group 'Ladies in White' said the move was unwarranted as the
island's new president, Raul Castro, had not made any significant moves
towards creating a more open or democratic society.

The Cuban government dismisses most dissidents as mercenaries who work
for the United States.

The United States has also criticised the EU decision.
