MIAMI -- A Coast Guard cutter repatriated 47 Cuban migrants to Bahia de
Cubanas in their homeland at 11:30 a.m. on Monday.
The Coast Guard said the Cubans were picked up:
- After a Coast Guard jet crew spotted two go-fast vessels on Jan. 18 in
the vicinty of Cay Sal Banks, Bahamas. A Coast Guard cutter with a
Bahamian official on board was diverted to intercept the two vessels.
When the Tempest arrived on scene the second vessel, believed to be
assisting the disabled vessel, fled with no migrants on board. The
Tempest crew found 32 migrants and two suspected smugglers on the
disabled go-fast.
- After the crew of the cruise ship Coral Princess rescued 16 migrants
who were on a raft or homemade boat on Jan. 17. They were later turned
over to the Coast Guard. At the request of the U.S. Citizen and
Immigration Service, one of the 16 migrants were taken to Guantanamo Bay
for further disposition.
