More Cubans Returned From US Than Last Year

Hardbeatnews, NEW YORK, NY, Weds. Aug. 8, 2007: So far this year, over a
thousand Cuban nationals, trying to make it to the United States, have
been repatriated.

A HBN count of reported repatriations by the U.S. Coast Guard over the
past six months puts the number of Cubans nabbed and returned to the
Caribbean island at 1,121.

They included 68 undocumented Cuban migrants sent back Tuesday. They
were nabbed from five separate interdictions. Another 94 were sent back
on August 2, bringing this month's total to 162.

Last year, for the same period, an estimated 1,040 Cubans were sent
back. For the entire year, the number stood at 2,293. They all largely
failed to make it to US shores and therefore could not qualify for the
controversial US 'wet foot, dry land' immigration policy that applies
only to them and not Haitians.

Of the Haitians repatriated, the number was approximately 601 this year.
There were none reported for the same period last year.

Officials also returned approximately 200 nationals to the Dominican
Republic so far this year. They included 22 yesterday to La Romana
following an at-sea interdiction Monday.

Of those repatriated yesterday, U.S. Coast Guards say four migrants from
that group were identified through the use of digital fingerprints and
photographs as having attempted to enter illegally into the United
States or a U.S. territory on one previous occasion. – Hardbeatnews.com
