The Cuban government will increase the number of housing experts it sent
two years ago to share their specialised housing skills with the North
West government officials.

This was confirmed by the North West Local Government and Housing MEC
Phenye Vilakazi after he held a meeting with Cuba's Deputy Minister for
Housing Construction, Rafael Soler Deschappels on Thursday.

Mr Deschappels expressed confidence at the work that had already been
carried out by six Cuban architects who contributed to the new design of
RDP houses in the Moses Kotane municipality.

"We have been working with North West province government for a long
time, bringing our professionals, especially architects to contribute in
the people's housing projects like the one in Moses Kotane," said the
deputy minister.

"We are happy with what they are doing here and we intend to deploy more
of them elsewhere in the country."

MEC Vilakazi and Mr Deschappels toured the housing projects planned and
designed by the architects in Moses Kotane Municipality's rural villages.

The purpose of the visit was to consolidate cooperation between the two
countries, especially in the field of construction.

MEC Vilakazi commended the Cuban architects' work on the houses which
incorporated design elements such as improved shape, more space and
other features that set them apart from the usual designs.

"Most rural areas are beginning to get better housing, as has been the
case in Moses Kotane Municipality," said Mr Vilakazi.

The South African government has strong bilateral economic and political
relations with the Cuban government.

This has seen the two countries exchanging medical students and
engineers to develop skills and increase capacity.
